India Wins double Gold. Bhutan has Amazing results @45thChessOlympiad.

Team India takes  double gold.

India Open and Women Team have won the 45th Chess Olympiad. Congratulations India we knew you would storm the world. You have made all of us proud with this amazing result.

Bhutan has in our own way done amazingly well. Team Bhutan ends the 45th Chess Olympiad with the best results in the three Chess Olympiad we have taken part in. 

Team Bhutan (Open) started the chess Olympiad ranked 171 and ended the Olympiad ranked 141 (30 rank jump) and the Women team started the Olympiad ranked 164 and finished the Olympiad ranked 147 (17 rank jump). The Open team jumped up 30 ranks while the Women team jumped up 17 ranks.

The 2014 chess Olympiad Open team had the least wins and had only 8 points which included a point which was awarded as the oppoenent of Karma Sonam did not show up but the point was awarded to him. In actuality the team had only 7 points from 44 games. The team also finished with negative position compared to the starting rank.

The 2022 chess Olympiad team had a significant improvement with 13.5 points and the starting rank 183 was significantly improved with the finishing rank of 172. This was a marked improvement from 2014 Olympiad results.

The 2024 chess Olympiad team has improved the results even more with 18.5 points and the starting rank of  171 was dramatically improved to 141 this is a amazing achievement.

We must thank IM Atanu Lahiri for his significant contribution in training our team for 9 months. His hard work and dedication has born fruits with our fantastic achievement.

The Women also performed very well but was not able to improve the performance as compared to the 2022 chess Olympiad. The results are very impressive non the less. Well done Women team. We are very proud of your results.

  At the end of the 45th Chess Olympiad, in Budapest, Hungary and after a brilliant performance by our Women and Open team. We must take the time to thank all our supporters, well wishers without whom non of this was possible. I would like to start by thanking IM Atanu Lahiri our team Captain and Coach without whom our players would not be able to have done as well as they did at the Olympiad. And he did all of this without taking any payment for his time and effort. Unfortunately he was unable to accompany the team to Budapest as his mother got sick and passed away during the Olympiad. A Breakthrough Moment at the Chess Olympiad

Suk Raj makes history at the 45th Chess Olympiad, at Budapest, Hungary Dear Chess enthusiast, I am happy to share our first good news from the 45th Chess Olympiad after the 2nd round out of the 11 rounds that will be played this Olympiad. Mr. Suk Raj becomes the first player in the history of Bhutan chess to defeat a 2000+ FIDE rated player in a official chess tournament. This a big brekthrough moment for Bhutan Chess. Now our players know they can beat Master level players. In the FIDE rating system you need to have at least 2000 rating to get a Master title. This rare acheivement has elludade all Bhutanese chess players till date. Mr. Suk Raj played a brillant game getting the advantage from the opening and then holding on till the end to find the win against Mr. Monnaatsheko K, the 2064 FIDE rated player from Botswana. Only Thimphu?

Why chess tournaments are ‘only’ held in Thimphu. Over the last few years, as the Bhutan Chess Federation (BCF) has become more active, we have frequently heard the question, "Why are chess tournaments only held in Thimphu?" There are several practical reasons why all the tournaments have been concentrated in Thimphu and not in other towns across Bhutan.   The main reasons are as follows: 1. Location of the BCF Office: The BCF office, along with our staff and volunteers, is based in Thimphu. This makes organizing events here more convenient and cost-effective. 2. Logistical Costs: Organizing a tournament outside Thimphu, such as in Bumthang, would require additional expenses, including travel and accommodation for our team. These costs significantly increase the overall expense of hosting events. 3. Limited Funding from the Bhutan Olympic Committee (BOC): In the past two years, the BCF has received only Nu 30,000 and Nu 60,000, which is barely sufficient to cover our ba...
